101 SEO Tips and Techniques to Help with Your Adsense Income

1. Use this link to find the top 100 current top keywords: http://www.google.co.uk/trends/hottrends

2. Don’t be eager to optimise your main keywords first. Concentrate on 'long tail' keywords and see quick results and in doing this you’ll understand the procedure better for when you're ready to tackle your main keywords.

3. A long tail keyword sample... First the main keyword - the atkins diet; and now the long tail keyword - the atkins diet 7 day plan.

3A. If and when you create a new web page, consider this... How many times do Google say that the key term is used. Do you want a very specific long tail keyword or phrase, such as, 'car hire in benidorm' with 250 searches a month; or do you want a long tail keyword phrase such as 'car hire alicante airport' with 3,700 searches per month. Generally to get to a holiday destination, they need to land at an airport first. Choosing the greater search potential, will long term increase your traffic.

4. INTERNAL LINKING STRATEGIES -  Make sure that your most important pages are always linked from all of your other pages.

5.  Search engines cannot read 'flash graphics' (or claim they can't). As a consequence if you have a lot of flash graphics or as many call them ‘singing and dancing sites’ you’ll not get a good ranking unless it is equally supported with text.

6. Try and have at least 10 html pages amongst all the other permutations. Sites that solely depend on .php or .asp need to be extra vigilant with their seo optimization

7. There are two types of website optimisation types. Firstly there is ‘on-page’. This is everything you can do to tweak your website and webpages.

8. Secondly… there is ‘off-page’ – this is basically practical work you can do to create links coming back to your webpage or website.

9. These two obviously work alongside each other. They work 20% on page and 80% off page; although off page will bolster your search engine rankings the most.

10. Off page… may bolster your rankings more, but if you haven’t got the basic structure of your website right, the improvements in your website rankings will falter and fall back down the rankings.
Type… link:www.yourchosenwebsite.com into the Google search and see how many backlinks any website has.

11. You can have a 1,000 web pages made up from a php script, but if you don’t have a basic 10 pages made up from html your website won’t get crawled very often by search engines.

12. The only web page that you don’t have a choice of name is the home page ‘index’.

13. Too much flash script on your website deters search engines from crawling your website.

14. How many websites have their entrance web page display like an endurance test? Web browser looking for information have little tolerance and will assume the rest of the site is the same and click away.

15. Try and make your entrance webpage open very fast. Not too many graphics and avoid flashing images.

16. Search Engines including Google can determine how long someone stays on your web pages. The longer they stay the better search engines choose to rank that page. 30 seconds is the first objective, anything beyond that and you're likely to get ranked better.

17. When using internal linking to your website, most use /property.html styled links. It is preferable to use the full web address as <a href="http://www.adwords-and-adsense.com/101-seo-tips-for-adsense.html">. This helps in various search engines as they consider such links as a 'valued link' and add it their list on inbound links to your site.

18. How do you get your web form to send both an email to you as the ‘form owner’ on completion and an email to the customer who fills it in as well? See this free web form compiler: http://www.tectite.com/formmailpage.php

19. It is important to have a fast loading website… Try an avoid lots of images. The images you must have make sure they have been reduced in size. Try visiting http://www.gifwizard.com for more advice on adjusting images.

20. Anything on your webpage that is either bold, italic or underlined are seen as more significant than any other text. So if you use such techniques on text that doesn’t have importance then you’ll be sending out the wrong signals.

21. Improve the Google coverage and ranking of your site with a Google sitemap

22. Search engines will often see your site as a text browser would. Test your site here!

23. Set up a 301 redirect to take traffic from your non-www address to your www address. See here for more info.

24. Create a custom 404 page so that even if someone encounters an error on your site, they are either re-directed or given an option to link elsewhere.

25. Have a Google Webmaster account... This will help to keep a check on crawling errors, so that you can put them right as soon as possible

26. Create an XML sitemap of your site and submit it to Google Webmaster.

27. Find quality and relevant blogs and leave a comment (with a link back to your site of course). Understand the difference between a 'no follow' link and a 'do follow' link. If the blog has 'no follow' links, the comment will not link back to your site. A 'do follow' link will.

28. Consider looking to leave comments on foreign blogs! They haven't got around to realising the importance of leaking page rank.

29. Leaking page rank - this is where you have more links off your site than coming in. If you have links off your site make them "rel=external nofollow" in the html. This stops leaking page rank.

30. The BIG quick back link tactic at the moment is video blogs. You could get your site listed at the top of Google in 10 minutes.

31. Search engines don't read javascript. So be careful how you use it. If you want your RSS Feeds to be read by the search engines avoid javascript feeds. Some of the very best feeds available are javascript; but if you use these the changeable content facility will not be utilised fully.

32. Contribute to related subject areas on Wikipedia.

33. Add a link to your site from within your eBay profile.

34. Make sure it’s easy for your users to subscribe to your RSS feed.

35. Submitting to a 1,000 Web Directories doesn't work. Search and find those directories with a good page rank for their inner pages. Take time to submit to these.

36. “Link baiting” means writing some killer content that people will want to link to. Like a “101 SEO Tips for Adsense” list!

37. Google has about 60% of the search engine market, Yahoo 20% and MSN 10%. Use those percentages to determine the amount of time you spend optimising for each big search engine.

38. Download the Google Toolbar and check the PageRank of the sites that you would want to do a link exchange with. Try to only link with sites having a link pages of PR 3 or more.

39. It would appear as I talk to the un-initiated that Google’s Page Rank is their ultimate aim. Once they get a Google Page Rank they sit back and watch the traffic flow in. This is not the case.

40. Google Page Rank acknowledges the quality of your site; but doesn’t base your eventual Google position upon it.

41. A Google Page Rank is a ‘core value’; and will aid your eventual position… But should you not optimise your page properly or have fewer inbound links than a site with a lower page rank you’ll rank lower than them.

42. Page Rank is credibility personified, but no guarantees of ranking in the top 10.

43. The age of your site alone will give you a page rank; as this age implies longevity.

44. Write articles that pertain to your product or service. Allow people to reprint your articles on their website, in their e-zine, newsletter, magazine or ebooks. Include your resource box and the option for article reprints at the bottom of each article.

45. Do you have a knack for web design? Create some templates, graphics, etc. and upload them to your site. Then, allow people to give away your free web design graphics, fonts, templates, etc. Just include your ad on them or require people to link directly to your web site. Make sure that you include a link back to your site in the copyright notice as well and require them to keep your copyright notice in tact.

46. Create a MySpace account and use it to publisise your site.

47. Bookmark your site on Del.icio.us and if you’re really keen, add a Del.icio.us button to your homepage.

48. Create a Technorati account and “claim” your blog.

49. Submit your site to free, search engine friendly directories. An excellent list can be found at Info Vilesilencer.

50. Conduct a survey. This is an excellent way to generate offline publicity.

51. Place a free ad for your company on Gumtree.

52. Syndicate your site’s content by using an RSS feed.

53. Submit your RSS feeds to aggregator sites like FeedBurner, Squidoo, Feedboy, Froogel, Jordomedia, FeedBomb, FeedCat, rssmad, feeddirectory and feedfury.

54. Sign up to StumbleUpon and get your friends to Stumble your site. Include a “Add to your Technorati favourites” button on your site.

55. Add a link to your site in the signature of any forums you post on.

56. Offer something for free. Free is good. People tell their friends about free stuff.

57. Gain exposure by submitting photos and pictures to Flikr.

58. Create a “lense” for your site on Squidoo

59. Ask friends, colleagues and associates to “Favourite” your blog on Technorati.

60. You can add a Bulletin to your MySpace account promoting your site that all your MySpace Friends will see.

61. Google Analytics is free and will tell you all you need to know about who’s visiting your site.

62. “Link baiting” means writing some killer content that people will want to link to. Like a “101 Tips to Improve Your Web Presence” list!

63. Don’t buy traffic. It’s un-targeted and won’t convert.

64. The more links there are to your site the better your rankings will be.

65. The more relevant the page linking to you the better.

66. Be precise about your keywords! If you are a ‘marketing company’ and are selling your skills on the internet… Don’t use the keywords ‘internet marketing’; be more specific… instead of using one word such as internet marketing which will be fiercely fought over, create sub headings… such as: corporate marketing on the internet, professional marketing on a budget…

67. BIG, Big Tip... If someone types into a search engine a keyword phrase and they choose your page to click through... At least expect to keep them on your page by talking about that keyword phrase. Give the internet browser 'continuity' and they'll thank in many ways. Don't then... have a page listed talking about 'property for sale in Rome' and when they open the page your main heading is 'property in Italy'.

68. Type any keyword into Google and as you scroll down the listings you’ll find sub category headings shouting out at you. Type in ‘weight loss’ for example and within 20 listings you’ll find ‘weight loss plan’.

69. Visit this web address for top ideas on current top keywords, an option to using Google's own: http://about.ask.com/en/docs/iq/iq.shtml

70. Search engines index the content of a website, and the more content you have, the better. Add relevant content to your website. If your website sells digital cameras, you can add reviews on the digital cameras that you carry. This will also attract potential buyers to your website. Usually buyers do research first before they buy online.

71. Adding content to your site, as one internet marketer says, "Makes you own more of the internet".

72. Double click on your photo in a website software program such as Microsoft Frontpage... You need to find the tab and then the appropriate box to enter a desrciption of the photo. Don't just call it image2 or myfriendshouse. Call it something using a ‘keywords’. It doesn't matter if it is not relevant. It maybe a graphic about a man and a phone... but call it a keyword such as 'travel in Germany'. This is called altering your <alt> tags.

73. Separate keywords in your website page names as thus... 'blue-things.html' or 'green_things.php'. There is a dispute by many optimizers as to whether this works, but one thing for sure is that it makes it easier for the web browser to quickly identify his target keyword amongst the gluten of text.

74. Submit content from your website that can be re-jigged into an ‘article’ and submit to article sites.

75. Don’t use ‘click here’ as anchor text to other destinations on your website. Change it to a keyword.

76. Don’t use ‘read more…’ as anchor text to other destinations on your website. Change it to a keyword.

77. Highlight an important cell in your table, click on view html, and see where it appears in the html screen. You will sometimes notice that a cell near the top appears near the bottom of the html. BE AWARE!... (Search engines crawl the ‘html’ of your site). What you’ve done if this is the case is tell the search engine crawler that this information isn’t so important because it appears at the bottom… So if this cell has important keywords you’ve relegated them in their importance. Once you’ve sussed this out you’ll design each and every subsequent pages differently.

78. One more point on tables… Sometimes if your important cell appears near the bottom, as your html script is concerned, then by just adding an extra blank cell you can change the sequence of how the whole page is read by the search engine.

79. On this same theme… avoid putting your navigation bar on the left… The important content must be first… this alone can improve your position in Google. Put your navigation bar on the right or at the bottom. But follow the principle of the table theory mentioned earlier. If you notice sometimes in html the right table cells can appear before the main cell; try and avoid this scenario.

80. If a website is at the top of Google it is doing something right… Try right clicking in an empty area on the website page and viewing source. Notice the clean html scripts for the meta tags. Check the whole page in its html form. Take a tour of several high ranking sites and pick up tips...

81. The purpose of ‘off page optimisation’ is the single most important factor to getting your site higher in search engines.

82. However if your ‘on page optimisation’ is poor you’ll get moved up 5 places instead of 50.

83. Allow people to provide your free online service to their web site, visitors, or e-zine subscribers. This could be free e-mail, e-mail consulting, search engine submissions, etc. Your imagination is the limit! Think about this for a little while. What do you have that you can give away free? How about a short report on your niche market? Use the tools that you have available (such as an autoresponder) to make this even easier for you to manage.

84. Allow people to give away your free software. Just include your business advertisement inside the software program. There are many tools available that allow you to "brand" the software with your contact information and message. Simply pay for these rights and the software is yours free! Or, you can even find some programs that allow you to create your own software. Use the search engines for some ideas.

85. Write an ebook. Allow people to place an advertisement in your free ebook if, in exchange, they give away the ebook to their web visitors or e-zine subscribers.

86. Purchase the branding rights to a viral eBook. Allow people to give away your free ebook to their visitors. Then, their visitors will also give it away. This will just continue to spread your ad all over the internet.

87. Send out a newsletter!

88. Ask bloggers and other Web site owners to review your site and/or products.

89. Press releases are often ignored. Try your local newspapers and free newspaper. They are glad for the different type of news.

90. Add a “Tell a Friend” function to your site, so people can easily recommend you to their mates.

91. Add submit to 'Social Bookmarking' and Social Networking sites tags at the bottom or side panels.

92. The current ranking of websites are thus:

Video Blogs

Commenting on Social Bookmarking Sites

Blogs on Social Networking

General Web Sites

Rarely will a 'general' website rank higher than a blog. That is why it important to have a separate blog and have links upon there directing traffic to your website.

93. Make a list, “Top 20″s work well. Update it regularly to give your visitors a reason to return. ... Just remember that ... Once you've done all the hard work to get someone to your site, you need to make the site good enough for people to return. Imagine if you'd had 5,000 visitors in 6 months, unless you change your traffic tactics you'll get 5,000 over the next 6 months. But ...  if you were able to make the first 5,000 return you'll double your traffic.

94. Don't assume that people aren't bothered to know what you do. I spend 10% of my day researching. I convince myself I going to enjoy this 10%. If you spend say 1 hour researching and pick up just one important tip, you could be earning big money within just a few weeks as your site speeds up the search engine rankings.

95. Find broken links on your site with Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM). ... - A free software tool - home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

96. Don’t buy traffic. It’s un-targeted and won’t convert. Most people have done this once... That was enouhg to realise isn't wasn't targeted enough.

97. If you are using graphical, Java Script or Flash based navigation and link buttons, then create text links on the bottom of all your pages.

98. Understand the ‘anchor keyword’… It can improve your rankings – especially within your own website. If you are using a link to go from ‘lettings’ to ‘property sales’; don’t make the link word ‘buy now’ or ‘more information’ – make the link word, a word or a phrase that includes a keyword.

99. In anchor keywords don’t forget to use the hyphon or underscore for the web page names to separate words. ( - or _ )

100. If you need ideas as to whom the get reciprocal links with, try this idea. Go to Google, type in your keyword or keyword phrase and test this principle on the top 5 and see what happens. Open another browser window. Type in the Google search box – link:www.??domainname???.com – and see who links to the top ranked websites.

101. Search maps have their importance and too many try to make one site map to fulfil two purposes. Make one for your visitors, perhaps in html, and one for the search engines, in xml. Avoid using cloaking techniques on your websites. Understand them first and consider their advantages and their disadvantages.

This list is by no means full and perfect, exhaustive or complete, but nonetheless may prompt you to take action and tweak your web sites so that they are both better optimized and better ranked. Although, as mentioned earlier better ranked doesn't always guarantee more traffic.

I don't normally write any views as I can't be bothered. But I may say that having read a few articles and been surprised at the content I feel obliged to comment. I have been both entertained and inspired by almost everything I read. This is strange for me because I'm a couch potato. Don't ever give up adding to your site.

The Google Trail

Abhinav Ramnarayan

Google has various strategies advertisers and individuals can use to make money.

It isn't just the big players who are benefiting from Google AdWords and AdSense. A whole network has arisen, including advertisers ranging from SMEs to MNCs, hosts from large publishing portals to individual bloggers, and, of course, the 50 million Internet users in the country.

A BLOG GOOGLE RUNS ADS on, which makes money for the blogger. - Bijoy Ghosh

Try typing `jobs' on Google search, and you might be in for a surprise — on the sponsored links column, one of the ads is by competitor Yahoo!

That is probably why Murugavel Janakiraman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Bharatmatrimony.com, comfortably maintains relations with both companies — Yahoo is an investor in his portal, while the other provides advertising space for the matchmaker.

However, it isn't just the big players who are benefiting from Google AdWords and AdSense. A whole network has arisen, which includes advertisers from SMEs to MNCs, hosts from large publishing portals to individual bloggers, and, of course, the 50 million Internet users in the country. According to a comScore Media Matrix 2005 report, about 80 per cent of Internet users access Google.com.

K. Sundararaman, Acting Sales Head, Google India, sheds some light on how this network works. He says that apart from the ads that appear on www.google.com, there is Google AdSense, which allows individual Web sites to rent out the space on the page.

These Web sites, Sundararaman explains, are selected through `site targeting' that "allows advertisers to choose individual Web sites within the Google content network where they would like their ads to appear ... allowing advertisers to handpick the audience they want to reach."

Managing ad campaigns

Apart from this, the advertiser can specify search-targeted keywords for categories such as broad matches, phrase matches, exact matches or negative matches. This keyword matching system is completely automated. "We suggest using a combination of two or more of these techniques to run an effective ad campaign," he says.

Which in turn means that managing an effective ad campaign with Google AdWords is not quite such a simple project. For example, Bharatmatrimony.com has a three-member internal team that continually reviews the conversion rate of the number of people that click on their ads in other Web sites, the cost of advertising on Google and the relevance of the keywords that the company has submitted, says Janakiraman.

As large clients, they work in conjunction with a team from Google that has been assigned to work with them. The company has bought about 30,000 keywords.

Keywords matter

Similarly, eBay has an internal team that works full-time on the paid search programme with the Google account team, according to Rathin Lahiri, Head - Marketing, eBay India. This is possibly because "paid search is one of the better performing channels and the search customer is an evolved customer," he says.

The revenue model for the Web site is that advertisers pay for the click or impression that they receive.

For ads priced at cost-per-thousand-clicks, an advertiser may pay as low as Rs 10 per thousand, and for cost-per-click priced ads, it may be as low as Re 0.44 per click, according to the company.

The rate of keywords varies, says Lahiri. For example, the keyword `Nokia' would be more valuable than a keyword such as `pencil' — at the end of the day, the rate that eBay pays is a function of the click-through-rate and the cost-per-click. The keyword `Nokia phone' is more valuable than `Nokia blue tooth device' and therefore has a better click-through-rate.

Users big and small

This has opened up a whole market through the AdSense route. And since the tool caters to publishers of all sizes, the company has both large publishers that have content on the Internet such as Sify.com, NDTV.com, and Moneycontrol.com, as well as individual Web site owners.

Deepesh Agarwal, who runs a Web site that provides freeware solutions, receives on an average 4,000-odd daily ad impressions and earns anywhere from $800 to $2,100 per month depending on the amount of traffic and its `quality.'

He has been using the service for three years. Though the first two years didn't yield many results, but the last year has been a good one. In fact, though the Web site was never intended as a money-spinner, it now constitutes the biggest portion of Agarwal's revenue.

Success story

"My traffic is primarily from the US and Canada — about 60 per cent — and the visitors are common computer users looking for free alternatives for paid shareware applications meant for day-to-day computer maintenance tasks," he explains.

But it doesn't even have to get that technical to be a success. Jamshed Velayuda Rajan, a Usability Consultant with Satyam Computers, maintains two Web sites — one in which he writes about himself and his family, and another blog on cricket.

The latter, he expects, will have traffic of about 2,500 to 3,500 people when cricket matches are going on.

Typically, 350 unique people per day, and about 450 to 500 clicks is the count for his two portals combined.

As for the remuneration, he explains, "High value keywords would earn more — if I had a finance blog, for example, I could make as much as $4 for one click.

Since cricket is not a money-spinner in that sense, perhaps between 10 and 30 cents per click." All in all, he has made about Rs 30,000 in the last two years.

Not bad for a man who was looking to have a bit of fun by writing about his life and his family.

PurelyGadgets use AdWords to grow their brand in the highly competitive electronic goods market

PurelyGadgets is one of the UK’s leading online retailers of electronic goods. Established in 2004 to capitalise on a rapidly expanding internet market, PurelyGadgets found their niche through using an in-house team of expert buyers to source the best value products from around the world. A combination of competitive pricing, fast delivery, and reliable pre and after sales facilities have proven popular with customers. The final strand however was growing their online presence – and it was to Google they turned to achieve this.
The challenge, and how Google AdWords fits in

Acquiring business and recognition in a highly competitive market was the key initial challenge that PurelyGadgets faced. Initially PurelyGadgets toyed with the idea of taking a hands-off approach to their advertising, by hiring a company who would take care of it for them. This approach wasn’t successful however, as Lim explains. “We believed that we could do this better [than an outside company] because we know our products and services.” Instead, PurelyGadgets turned to Google AdWords to assist them in creating an online presence. “I actually learned about online advertising from Google,” admits Lim. “We find Google very easy to use. The main reason is that we can control the budget so easily. We were a very new start-up company then and we were very concerned with costs and Google let us see…results within twenty-four hours.”
Advancing with AdWords

Having begun trading from home in 2004, as a company of four to five employees, PurelyGadgets now employs over 40 people in their London based offices. “We grew about 700% over the past two years,” declares Lim. “Without using Google we would not grow this fast.”

Expanding further on this point, Lim says “Google initially put us on a par with other big brands…I think Google is a trusted brand…the demographic feels more confident buying from us…because they see us from Google…If you’re looking at increasing market share, branding…and also customer acquisition… Google is a much better choice because it has a much bigger audience.”
Google tools

Given the competitiveness of the market in which PurelyGadgets operates it is necessary for them to be both extremely dynamic and make full use of all AdWords features available to them. This is something which they do to excellent effect, as Lim explains. “We eliminate a lot of unqualified leads with negative keywords…Although it’s a very simple functionality, I find negative keywords extremely useful.”

“We use Google Analytics which is fabulous,” he further comments. “AdWords Editor is very good as well…we change our prices every day…only Google allow us to have that sort of flexibility.”
Future Plans

Not content with entering into new territories from a retail perspective, PurelyGadgets intend to do so geographically as well. At present due to a lack of viable payment platforms, PurelyGadgets restrict their activities to the UK market. However, Lim is enthusiastic and optimistic about the imminent launch of the Google payment platform, Google Checkout. “I think that once the Google Checkout has been launched [we will] have a payment platform all across the world. I think that will open up our market totally’.

Speaking of future plans to continue growing with Google AdWords, Lim states “It feels like you do have somebody working for you in Google…I can’t find anything better.”

Success Story

Lighting Direct cuts costs and triples Clickthrough Rate (CTR) with Google Analytics

Founded in 1991, Lighting Direct is regarded as the number one online lighting company in the UK. With over 6000 products on the company's website, Lighting Direct has established itself as a one-stop-shop for everything from the grandest chandeliers to novelty Christmas lights. The company also prides itself on providing value-for-money and helpful information that caters to both indoor and outdoor lighting.

The challenges facing Lighting Direct have been in constant flux as the company transformed from an Internet new-comer to an online leader in its field. As late as 2002, the company had just three staff, of which only one was full-time. The man at the helm was Gary Berg, "I put together a little website with about 200 products on it. Then we started getting a bit of interest and I started looking for ways of how I could let people know I was there...we really just wanted to drive traffic to our site. I found AdWords was the best way of doing that."

As an Internet newcomer, Lighting Direct had shown that they could use Google AdWords to drive traffic to their website and build their company. However, with business growing rapidly, Berg soon decided that to scale Lighting Direct efficiently and to make sure that all keywords were profitable, emphasis needed to shift from simply driving traffic and brand awareness to also creating conversions and increasing return-on-investment. To make the advertising better pay for itself and to better track user behaviour, Berg turned to the free tool Google Analytics to help him adapt his advertising. The results were dramatic. The highly targeted ad texts and keywords resulted in many campaign clickthrough rates sky-rocketing to 20%–30%. It was not unusual for campaigns to see their clickthrough rate triple in the period after the review.

On the changes made, Berg says, "I was able to take out quite a few keywords and make the campaigns leaner. There has definitely been an increase in business since using Analytics." This latest advertising drive is just one such initiative taken in a highly successful relationship between Lighting Direct and Google AdWords. As the company has grown they have found different tools and techniques available through AdWords. "When we first started with this exercise we had two part-time people and now we employ ten people. We are now doing about seven or eight times the turnover compared to four years ago thanks to AdWords and Analytics."

You can of course advertise anything you want on your website, but items that are specifically linked to the reason the visitor arrived at your site will sell much better

Google AdSense Tips
by: Wazir Singh

Google AdSense program is a popular web advertising program which provides a good income source for many websites. There are well defined terms of service to strictly adhere to when participating in the program.

On my visit through sites and forums, I daily notice several instances of misuse of AdSense ads. So here a few helpful Google AdSense tips, probably many you already know, and few you might gain by knowing now. These AdSense faq are all picked from the Program Policies, Terms and Conditions and FAQ itself and presented in a simplified manner.

1. Never click your own AdSense ads or get them clicked for whatever reason. You know this one very well. This is a surefire way to close you AdSense account. Never tell your office associates or friends to click on them. Keep a check if your family or children are busy increasing your income by clicking your ads and indirectly trying to stop your income. Don't even think of offering incentives for clicks, using automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. AdSense is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks. Check the ads which appear on your pages by the Google Preview tool if required.

2. Never change the AdSense code. There are enough means of AdSense optimization & customizations available to change the colour, background or border to suit your needs. Do whatever you want to do outside the code, never fiddle within the ad or the search code. They know it when you do. The search code has more limitations to colour and placement, but you should adhere to the rules. The code may stop working and violates the TOS.

3. Do not place more than 3 ad units and 3 ad links or 2 AdSense search boxes on any web page. Anyway, ads will not appear in those units even if you place more ad units. But this is the limit they set, so it is better to stick to it.

4. Do not run competitive contextual text ad or search services on the same site which offer Google AdSense competition in their field. Never try to create link structures resembling the AdSense ads. Never use other competitive search tools on the same pages which have AdSense powered Google search. They do allow affiliate or limited-text links. Update: Google has allowed you to run contextual advertising like Yahoo ads, Chitika etc provided the ads do not resemble AdSense ads.

5. Do not disclose confidential information about your account like the CTR, CPM and income derived via individual ad units or any other confidential information they may reveal to you. However, you may reveal the total money you make as per recent updates to the TOS.

6. Label headings as "sponsored links" or "advertisements" only. Other labels are not allowed. I have seen many sites label ads with other titles. Dont make your site a target in a few seconds gaze.

7. Never launch a New Page for clicked ads by default. AdSense ads should open on the same page. You may be using a base target tag to open all links in a new window or frame by default. Correct it now as they do not want new pages opening from clicked ads.

8. One Account suffices for multiple websites. You do not need to create 5 accounts for 5 different websites. One account will do. If you live in the fears that if one account is closed down for violation of TOS, believe me they will close all accounts when they find out. You can keep track of clicks by using channels with real time statistics. They will automatically detect the new site and display relevant ads.

9. Place ads only on Content Pages. Advertisers pay only for content based ads. Content drives relevant ads. Although you might manage some clicks from error, login, registration, "thank you" or welcome pages, parking pages or pop ups, it will get you out of the program.

10. Do not mask ad elements. Alteration of colours and border is a facility to blend or contrast ads as per your site requirements. I have seen many sites where the url part is of the same colour as the background. While blending the ad with your site is a good idea, hiding relevant components of the ads is not allowed. Also do not block the visibility of ads by overlapping images, pop ups, tables etc.

11. Do not send your ads by email. Html formatted emails look good and allow placement of these javascript ads. But it is not allowed as per TOS. You do not want impressions registering on their logs from any email even once. They are watching!

12. Keep track of your content. So AdSense is not allowed on several non content pages. But it is also not allowed on several content pages too. Do not add it on web pages with MP3, Video, News Groups, and Image Results. Also exclude any pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content.

13. Do not alter the results after ad clicks or searches - Ensure you are not in any way altering the site which the user reaches to after clicking the ads. Do not frame, minimize, remove, redirect or otherwise inhibit the full and complete display of any Advertiser Page or Search Results Page after the user clicks on any Ad or Search results.

14. Avoid excessive advertising and keyword stuffing - Although the definition of 'excessive' is a gray area and is subject to discretion, yet Google AdSense with correct placement, focused content and high traffic will get you much more income than other programs, so excessive advertising is not required. Keyword stuffing does target better focused ads, but overdoing it is not required.

15. Ensure you Language is Supported - AdSense supports "Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Danish, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, English, Polish, Finnish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Hungarian, Swedish, Italian and Turkish. In addition, AdSense for search is available in Czech, Slovak, and Traditional Chinese. If your web pages language is not supported, do not use the code on such pages.

16. Maximum 2 referral button per product per page - With the launch of the Google AdSense referral program, you are allowed to put only 2 referral buttons for AdSense referral, AdWords referral, Google pack and Firefox with Google toolbar referral.

17. Do not specify Google ads as your alternate ads. - Several services like Chitika eminimalls allow you to place alternate urls, when a targeted paying ad cannot be displayed. This involved creating an simple html page and putting the ad to be displayed instead. Even AdSense allows an alternate url feature instead of displaying public service ads. But never use AdSense ads as alternate urls.

18. Do not confuse with adjacent images - It was a common policy to increase CTR by placing same number of images as the number of text ads, which falsely gave the impression that the text ads represented an explanation to these images. Inserting a small space or a line between the images and ads is not allowed. Make sure that the ads and images are not arranged in a way that could easily mislead or confuse your visitors.
