Become the Tarzan of the Google Jungle…

It is human nature to defend our position… That said, our hard outer shell defends our inner weak emotional self. The one that one minute may hate someone and the next say that they love them.

Yes there is a truth that some people have a stronger emotional sturdiness, but they are few are far between.

Google Adwords and Google Adsense are an integral part of the Google jungle. The jungle itself is amazing to look at and equally exciting to visit; but if you are not careful you’ll get slapped, stung and leave the jungle penniless, as if robbed.

The image I am trying to create here is do we become the Tarzan of the Jungle, and become ‘one’ with the jungle. Or… do we the hell out of the jungle and look for safety in our own ready built concrete haven? Looking back at that jungle I may add, and considering whether to exaggerate one more time that you could have been the king of the jungle.

Using Google as the example in this study, they appear at times as the opposition. Enough I may say to swear at, curse, point a finger or two and even write to your friends about. So they are everything that is bad about the jungle.

Let me explain the rules of the jungle. Respect the nature of the jungle and you can live in harmony. Ignore the rules and you’ll get stung, poisoned and live a life in true pain and confusion.

Allow me also to explain how ‘rules’ mean greater freedom. Rather than get too political, I’ll complete this explanation in one paragraph. Visit the US, the UK and most of the developed world, and you’ll see millions of rules. You may hate several of the rules but nonetheless you feel relatively safe living with them. Now visit a third world country with few rules. You feel anxious, frightened and unwilling to return.

Now here is the crux of this article… I gather information from both psychological and philosophical methodology. As a human we perform best and function at our peak when we are happy. When we are annoyed and frustrated we can only expect 50 to 60% excellence.

So the question to remind you is… Do we become the Tarzan of the Jungle, become the king; or do we fight the rules and shout aloud, but only from the mouth of an insect?

If you are trying to earn a living from Google, using adwords or adsense, and are frustrated with their jungle you are not open to learn anything. Any journey starts with a single step, but when you are cursing all you do is walk around in circles.

For you to earn a ‘good’ living from using the services that Google offer you need to be operating at your peak performance. Working from a position of hatred will only limit your possibilities.

Google has a million rules and regulations to follow so the task of understanding their jungle is a big one. Don’t expect to understand it in a week. It may take 10 years, but the first step is to ‘open up’ and begin to learn.

Allocate 30 minutes a day to rest in reading about Google’s services and how best to use them. Tarzan may swing through the jungle on a vine, but he does check the vine first. So it may be prudent not to just learn about Google from Google.

This article will test your skill of ‘intuition’; do you get a ‘gut’ feeling that becoming the Tarzan is naturally the right course to travel. Or, are you the radical and want to challenge everything?

Challenging will use up more energy than conforming. Enjoy the Google Jungle and you will see beauty in motion… challenge it and you’ll never maximize your performance, you’ll never peak at your tasks and you’ll eventually turn into a bitter person. You’ll not be meant to live in a Jungle but an ‘underworld’.

KEYWORDS and KEY PHRASES as we know these are the lifeblood of the internet. Without proper control of these we would not have an internet business.

We cannot name a web page ‘page01.html’ and expect it to rank well in a search engine. We need to use our keywords, in the page title and appropriately through the page. Ideally it is best to use one keyword per page otherwise the search engines struggle to determine which keyword is the more dominant upon that page.

We no doubt have all discovered a technique on how to find more keywords to develop our own list. As you may or may not now your list of keywords and keyword phrases should vary in their potential from very popular to just a few clicks per day. Allow me to explain further.

If you intended list was 200 keywords, then not all should be very popular. This is because your website initially cannot compete with the top ranked websites. Apart from good search engine optimization, you’ll need longevity and backlinks to help bolster your ranking position. Meanwhile the ‘lower ranked keywords phrases’, generally referred to as ‘long tailed keywords’ stand a better chance of getting your web pages ranked on the first page of Google, Yahoo and MSN.

This ability to rank on the first page of the search engines is down to your research on long tail keywords; it is these that will generate the traffic for your site over the first few months of its existence. Once your site is more established you should be able to get your more popular keywords ranked too.

As I trot around the internet on various forums I notice specifically that many can’t establish a niche to start a website or a home based business, and wonder where to get the inspiration from. Well I find that the inspiration is in the keyword list.

If you take a keyword that has over a million searches a month, the market is obviously buoyant. Perhaps for a newcomer such buoyancy means that it is difficult to get in and compete successfully with the so called BIG boys. But this is where many people fall before they’ve started.

A niche can be found within a niche, we’d call that a sub niche. If for example we looked at a popular niche such as SPORTS CLOTHES but found too many other competitors, we could easily be scared from approaching this niche. But if we explored the potential long tail keywords we may find a sub niche such as white sports socks, with only 112 web pages listed and 96 of those are actually deep inner pages of a larger site. This could mean that if you started a website called – white-sports-socks.com you could have a potential market already for the waiting. Plus of course it wouldn’t take much to get your website at the top of the rankings.

In every working day you should allocate 5% to 10% of your time for research and development. It is this time where you can explore the potential of bigger niches. Not necessarily to understand bigger websites, but to understand where there is a lot of internet traffic. Such traffic can be dissected and split into further sub-niches. It is here where you can expand your internet campaigns, rather than concentrate on trying to attack the major keyword areas.

In conclusion… the main areas to develop a business or diversify and existing business is in the long tail keywords and phrases. Find a major keyword and explore the potential beneath the surface.

I need to start with an analogy to explain the importance of keywords. Your selection of keywords is the ‘heart of your business’ as far as adsense income is determined. The heart, yes the most important organ of your body, not your leg or your wrist, but your heart. If your heart is failing, putting a bandage on your wrist isn’t going to work.

So here is the crunch… If your adsense income has dropped or you need to build an adsense business, then look after your heart. It is the life blood of the system, it pumps the money into your adsense account.

It has taken a few hard lessons for me to understand this principle. This is how I felt the pump, pump, pump send a light bulb moment to my brain. It started when the town I live in lost the internet connection. Phew… I’m sure that everyone has lost a connection for as little as ten minutes and thought their world had ended. But I lost the internet connection for three days. I got on with other stuff as you do, but what I did do is re-read some of the books I had purchased.

Of course, years on from getting more knowledge, to re-read an ebook generally is boring; and most of it was, but I kept stumbling, pausing and contemplating on the keyword section of the ebooks. If keywords are the heart of a business you need to dedicate more time and effort to keep them healthy.

If you are starting out, use the system below. If you already have adsense websites and the income has dropped, you need to be aware that trends change and the keyword you chose a year ago may not be the major one being searched for today. Go through this procedure and add another 250 pages.

We all use the keyword tools available and knock up a 5,000 keyword list in half an hour, spend another hour sifting through and choosing our prime keywords. That’s it we’re done. But… would you take an hour and a half to mould and create a heart and expect to live beyond a few months?

Once your website is up and running, I would guess you must spend 2 or 3 hours a day trying to get traffic to your website. This effort could be a little wasted if your keyword choice is hurried.

Here is the best way to choose keywords to maximize your search engine positions. Let’s assume that you need 250 keywords. Up to 50 of those should be first tier. These should include all the main associated keywords and most important should be ‘high’ paying keywords too. These you can check through either the free Google Keyword Tool or through varying software keyword tools.

These first 50 keywords will be the fiercely competed words and as a consequence you’ll not rank very high for them initially. Yet long term, the optimization, the blogs, social networking and bookmarking should help rise those 50 web pages nearer the top of the search rankings.

The other 200 keywords you choose will be ‘long tail keywords’. You may start with a 1,000 to sift through to finish up with 200. First you need to check each keyword separately. Allocate a day to do this, because the effort you put in now will serve you well. The purpose of checking as I’m going to mention is so that you get onto the front page of Google as soon as the search engines crawl your deep inside pages.

The first thing to check is if that long tail keyword gets traffic each month. Between 50 to 500 hits per month is fine for long tail keywords. Above those hits per month and you’ll probably find that too many other websites are competing for that keyword. Below that amount and you may find the quantity of hits vary from a few hits a month to zero hits.

Once you have a selection that meet the first criteria, then you need to check the competing sites. Is there 2,000 or is there 8? To do this you need to put this search query into Google – inurl:my-keywords – replacing my-keywords with your own of course. Use both variations, with dashes separating the words and without dashes. Make a note of the total of competing websites. Once you gone through them all you can make a decision on which keywords are going to get you on the front page of Google.

Even if your web page isn’t optimized too well, if there are only 8 competing websites, you’ll appear on the front page. This will mean a steady but small flow of traffic 50 to 500 hits per month. Multiply that by the sites with long tail keywords and the minimum you could expect, once the search engines have listed the inner pages, is 200 x 50 = 10,000.

There are also other options to consider if you are adding web pages slowly. Use in the Google search box “allintitle: and allinanchor: keyword”. Extra work, but will pay off in the long run.

A reasonable time limit to expect all 250 pages listed in Google, so long as you’ve done the necessary blogging or bookmarking, should be 4 to 6 weeks; it can be done quicker but more work is involved.

Don’t just rely on Google, you’ll need to submit your site to other major engines as well. Plus if you are by chance one of eight on that first Google page, you’ll need to make sure that your description tag is better than all the other tags on that Google page, as they often use that tag to display to content of the site.

10,000 possible hits per month within the first 10 weeks, not bad for a beginner… Realistically if you shared that with the other sites, you may only get 2,000 visitors enter your site per month, but that is still good. Of course… the visitor who clicks your web site link is relatively targeted by this stage and your conversion rate for clicking on adsense ads could be between 10 to 20%. 10% of 2,000 clicks is 200, which could be worth $50 to $200. The day’s work you spent on sifting these keywords has paid for itself. Then you can expect more of the same the following month. As many adsense professionals have 5 to 20 websites, multiply the expected earning by the websites and suddenly you can see the potential, and I may add this is before you start trying to get traffic. Glory days… if you get the job done right.
